Position Objective

The University and Career Counsellor fosters an engaging, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment aligned with the Cambridge International Curriculum and the Cambridge Learner Attributes — developing students who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged learners.

The University and Career Counsellor supports students in developing self-awareness, academic direction, and future readiness by providing personalized university, career, and life-path counseling. The counsellor plays a vital role in preparing students for success in global university applications, while fostering the Cambridge Learner Attributes — helping students become confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged lifelong learners.

Key Responsibilities

University and Career Counseling

  • Advise students (Grades 9–12) on university options, career pathways, and course selections aligned with individual strengths and aspirations.
  • Provide guidance to students on subject selection (IGCSE and A-Levels) aligned with their career goals and higher education aspirations.
  • Guide students and parents through application processes for universities in multiple systems (UK, US, Japan, Europe, Canada, Australia, etc.).
  • Support students in completing key components of applications — essays, personal statements, academic profiles, recommendation/ reference letters, and interviews.
  • Organize workshops, career fairs, and university presentations.
  • Maintain and update resources on admissions trends, scholarships, and testing requirements (SAT, IELTS, TOEFL, UCAS, Common App, etc.).

Academic and Pastoral Support

  • Collaborate with subject teachers and academic coordinators to align academic choices with university goals.
  • Identify and support students needing academic, emotional, or motivational guidance related to future planning.
  • Encourage realistic, growth-oriented goal setting through one-on-one counseling sessions.

School Representation and Communication

  • Build and sustain partnerships with universities, scholarship organizations, and admissions officers worldwide.
  • Communicate effectively with parents regarding student progress and university options.
  • Update the community regularly on community sessions, communications and feedback on initiatives being undertaken
  • Represent UIA professionally at international education fairs and counselor conferences.
  • Promote the marketing of the UIA vocational pathways to the community.

Data Management and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of student applications, offers, and matriculation outcomes.
  • Prepare annual reports analyzing trends in admissions and career placements.
  • Use data to continuously refine programs and strategies.

Program Development

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Career and University Program for middle and high school students.
  • Integrate into the curriculum through workshops, advisory lessons, and enrichment sessions.
  • Promote values of lifelong learning, academic integrity, and resilience.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Education, Psychology, Counseling, or related field).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in university or school counseling.
  • Knowledge of global university systems (US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, etc.).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong written English skills for essay and statement support.

Preferred:

  • Experience in Cambridge International or IB
  • Familiarity with platforms such as Naviance, BridgeU, Cialfo, or MaiaLearning.
  • Master’s degree or certification in Counseling.
  • Fluency in Japanese or other languages (advantageous but not required).
